Choose Your Microphone Carefully!!
When you walk in Sam Ash or Guitar center, know what you DON’T want. Why? Some sales person may be lurking in the dark trying to sell you a $500 tube microphone that you don’t need! Don’t be too harsh on them, gas is$3.00-$4.00/gal and everybody has to make a living. However, SO DO YOU and you have to make art. My number one recommendation for a microphone is the Rode NT-1A (pictured right). It’s around $200.00 USD and it is clean and warm. Want a professional sound at a somewhat affordable price? I know $200.00 is still steep, but this mic will not disappoint. It will disappoint if you connect to to a crappy mic pre-amp! This is the mistake most people make. A safe bet is the Mbox. The mic pre-amps are awesome and Digidesign gives you a copy of Pro-Tools LE. Truly a win win situation and affordable (around $300.00). It also gives you the flexibility to do some very dynamic vocal recording (i.e screaming, shouting, or even singing!). Spoken Word artists arm yourselves with this knowledge as you visit your local or online home recording retailers.
